Annual Solo Competition

The JC Music/Yale School of Music Annual Solo Competitions are entering and planning
out their third annual competition. Due to the increasing interest in this competition, the
directors are planning to split the competition into two separate competitions for 2012
and are expanding the age range to students in grades 5-12 and have added piano and
percussion to the popular strings, brass and woodwind competitions held in the past.

According to Co-Directors JC Caillouette, President of JC Music and John Miller,
Director of the Yale School of Music Community Division and the CMEA Southern
Regional Chairman, students have always had the opportunity to audition for Regionals
and All State for a chance to be named one of the prestigious state ensembles, but had
little opportunity to compete against each other as soloists, live on stage in front of a
panel of prestigious judges along with the opportunity to win cash prizes. The JC Music/
Yale School of Music competitions coordinate their schedules around CMEA activities.
The preliminary auditions are held at JC Music in Meriden and are judged by certified
CMEA adjudicators from around the state. The finals are held a few weeks later and the
event is always open to the public free of charge!

The prestigious judging committee, composed of band & orchestra directors and/or
members of the music profession, judge the competition finals. Each participant is
required to provide their own accompanist; and based on the judges’ decisions, monetary
awards are given for the top scores and all winning performances are video recorded and
released on Vimeo by the Yale School of Music and on Youtube by JC Music.

Additional details will be released as they become available, and applications will
be distributed to Connecticut Band & Orchestra directors at the four CMEA regional
auditions and will also be available for downloading here at JC-Music.com or at
musicians.yale.edu/musicinschools.
